A DuPage County judge granted the state’s motion on April 3 to detain Carlos Barrera, a West Chicago resident, before trial after he was charged with leading police on a high-speed chase and illegally possessing a loaded gun. Barrera, age 20, faces two counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding a police officer, one count of aggravated unlawful possession of a weapon, as well as several misdemeanor charges including battery and driving while his license was suspended.

The case highlights ongoing concerns about public safety and law enforcement’s response to dangerous situations involving firearms. According to authorities, the incident began late on April 2 when West Chicago police responded to reports that someone in a vehicle had displayed a gun at an individual walking his dog. Officers located the vehicle allegedly driven by Barrera and attempted a traffic stop. Police say Barrera fled at speeds reaching approximately 100 miles per hour near Winfield Road before being stopped with assistance from Wheaton officers using spike strips.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said, “The allegations that Mr. Barrera fled from police at a high rate of speed while armed with a loaded gun are extremely disturbing.” Berlin also said he appreciated the efforts of local law enforcement: “Once again, a defendant who thought they could outrun law enforcement in DuPage County learned the hard way that our officers are extremely well trained to safely apprehend those who flee instead of pulling over. Thankfully, no innocent pedestrians or motorists were injured as a result of Mr. Barrera’s alleged actions.”

West Chicago Chief of Police Colin Fleury commented on the risks involved: “The dangerous and reckless actions allegedly taken by Mr. Barrera – fleeing at speeds of 100 m.p.h. and striking another vehicle, placed our officers and the entire community at significant risk.” Fleury also said he was grateful for cooperation between agencies in ending the pursuit safely.

Barrera is scheduled for his next court appearance on April 27 before Judge Brian Telander. Officials remind the public that these are only charges; all defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt.
