Stephanie Trussell, a candidate for Illinois House District 42, expressed concerns over the release of Khalil Bryan, who was facing serious charges. Trussell said on X that Bryan has a history of burglary, assault, and drug offenses.
“Accidentally Released”, Khalil Bryan, who was being held on a warrant for aggravated assault with a firearm, domestic abuse, child endangerment and home invasion,” said Trussel. “He has a criminal history that includes burglary, assault and drug violations.”
The Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office mistakenly released Bryan after confusing him with another inmate during bond processing. According to The Guardian, Sheriff Susan Hutson apologized for the clerical error and pledged a full investigation into custody protocols.
While national reporting on mistaken inmate releases is limited, the Bureau of Justice Statistics highlights that about two-thirds of released offenders are rearrested within three years. This statistic underscores the public safety risks such errors can pose.
According to the Bureau of Justice Statistics, 68% of individuals released pretrial are rearrested within three years and 77% within five years. These figures reflect high recidivism risks that amplify concerns over accidental releases from custody.
Trussell is identified by Ballotpedia as a Republican politician who ran for Illinois lieutenant governor alongside Darren Bailey in 2022 and is now seeking election to the Illinois House in District 42 for 2026.
