Burr Ridge sees 18.4% rise in Medicaid spending for hearing services in 2024

In 2024, Burr Ridge Medicaid providers billed a total of $1,589,527 for services in the Hearing Services category, data from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Medicaid Provider Spending database show. That figure is up 18.4% from 2023, when $1,342,032 in claims were made for the same service category.

Medicaid, a state-administered public health insurance program supported by joint federal and state funding, provides coverage for low-income individuals and families, seniors, children, and people with disabilities. This makes it a key component of the United States health care system.

Since Medicaid payments are funded by taxpayers, fluctuations in local billing reflect how publicly funded health care resources are allocated within communities.

The “Hearing Services” classification represents a set of Medicaid services defined by provided care types, organized through standardized HCPCS and CPT code groups. Each billing code in this analysis was uniquely assigned to a service category using consistent prefixes and numeric ranges to facilitate accurate aggregation and trend assessment without double counting.

While Medicaid outlays increased in various service groups, Hearing Services held the second-largest amount for total Medicaid payments in Burr Ridge in 2024.

Statewide in Illinois, Hearing Services ranked 14th in total Medicaid payments for 2024.

Between 2019 and 2024, Medicaid payments linked to Burr Ridge Hearing Services climbed by $833,854 (110.3%). Several periods, especially in 2021 and 2023, saw particularly strong annual increases.

In 2024, all $1,589,527 in Medicaid payments within the Hearing Services category came from ZIP code 60527, which represented 100% of such payments in Burr Ridge that year.

For reference, the 18.4% uptick in Burr Ridge Medicaid payments tied to Hearing Services between 2023 and 2024 compares to a 32.7% increase across all Medicaid claim categories citywide for the same period.

According to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, total federal and state Medicaid spending hit approximately $871.7 billion in fiscal year 2023, representing about 18% of total national health expenditures, a substantial increase from $613.5 billion in 2019, prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This increase represents about 40% growth over several years, largely driven by higher enrollment and utilization through and after the pandemic years.

Recent federal budget proposals signed under the Trump administration have aimed to decrease federal Medicaid funding and change the program’s structure. The “One Big Beautiful Bill Act,” enacted in 2025, is projected to reduce federal Medicaid spending by more than $1 trillion over the next 10 years and introduces new policies such as work requirements and greater cost-sharing, which could affect beneficiary coverage and funding. These legislative changes are expected to transfer more costs to states and place constraints on federal Medicaid growth, even as enrollment remains high.
