Senator Seth Lewis (R-Bartlett) has initiated a summer literacy learning program aimed at first through sixth-grade students from the 24th District. The program is designed to keep young minds active during the summer break from school.
"Students need to exercise their brains," emphasized Lewis. "Just like exercising keeps muscles in shape, reading keeps the brain in shape. If students don’t read over the summer, they do not retain all they learned the previous school year and lose literacy skills."
The challenge set for students entering first through sixth grades is to read eight books over the summer. Notably, books over 200 pages have the potential to count as two books. Upon completing the readings, a summer reading form should be filled out and signed by a parent or guardian. The form is accessible at https://senatorlewis.com/LewisSummerReading.
For those who rise to the summer reading challenge, Senator Lewis promises a rewarding outcome. "Those who complete my summer reading challenge will receive an official certificate of recognition from the Illinois Senate and an invitation to an ice cream party," Lewis shared. "I hope to have strong participation by students who recognize the value of a great book."
To be eligible for the recognition, completed forms should be returned by August 4th. Those seeking further information can reach out to the Lewis district office at (630) 349- 0645.
