Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi tweeted on Jul. 13 about serious weather conditions affecting the Chicago area this week. Krishnamoorthi represents the 8th district of Illinois and encouraged citizens to contact his office for more details on recovery efforts.

"Twin tornadoes touched down near Elgin and South Elgin yesterday, causing serious damage to property in some areas," Krishnamoorthi wrote. "For those in need of help with recovery efforts, please contact my district office."

The 8th congressional district which Krishnamoorthi represents includes parts of Cook, Kane and DuPage County, all of which were affected by the storms.

In addition, Krishnamoorthi retweeted an article from the Daily Herald detailing the twin tornadoes that touched down in Kane County on Wednesday, July 12.

According to the article, the damage caused by the storms consisted of downed trees and powerlines. Additionally, two apartment buildings in Huntley were badly damaged, with one building losing its roof.

As a result, eight families have been displaced from their homes. There have also been power outages reported in the area. One of the tornadoes touched down near O'Hare International Airport. According to FlightAware, 169 flights were canceled and nearly 500 were delayed.

Mayor of Elgin Dave Kaptain expressed the urgency to get residents back home.

"We want to get people back in their homes as quickly as possible. If your home is going to need to be repaired and fixed, we will help you."

The Red Cross of Illinois is supporting those in need of housing. Fortunately, no lives were lost as a result of the storm.

According to a July 14 article from ABC Chicago, 11 affected areas were confirmed around Chicago by the National Weather Service.

The confirmed tornadoes occurred in Burr Ridge to Stickney, Elgin, Huntley, Elgin, Oswego, Barrington, Long Grove, Carol Stream to Glendale Heights, Itasca to O'Hare, O'Hare to Des Plaines and Streamwood.
