Schaumburg Progress Report for March 18, 2022

SUBMIT YOUR VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS
The Village of Schaumburg is now accepting nominations for Volunteer of the Year. Nominations for Schaumburg’s Volunteer of the Year, Volunteer Organization of the Year and Youth Volunteer of the Year will be accepted through Friday, April 15. Nominees can represent social, civic, religious, community, school, and nonprofit organizations within the Village of Schaumburg and Schaumburg Township community.
Award recipients will be selected by a panel of judges from nominations received from residents and the business community. Recipients will be honored at the Volunteer of the Year Awards Luncheon that will take place Wednesday, May 4 at Chandler's, 401 N. Roselle Rd. in Schaumburg.
Nomination materials and additional information about the Volunteer of the Year Awards Luncheon is available on the village's website.

SELECT YOUR GARBAGE AND RECYCLING CART SIZES BY MARCH 18
As a reminder, Schaumburg residents are encouraged to select their preferred cart size for garbage and recycling from Lakeshore Recycling Services by today (March 18). Visit the web portal or call LRS Customer Service at (844) 633-3577 to make selections.
Residents who do not make their selections by March 18 will receive the default size of a 96-gallon cart for garbage and a 64-gallon cart for recycling. Residents may opt to use their own containers but will need to select that option through the web portal or by calling the LRS customer service team to avoid receiving default carts. All carts will be delivered during the month of April.
With the change in garbage and recycling haulers taking effect May 1, village staff has compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions such as:
  • What if I want a different size cart or additional carts after the April delivery?
  • What do we do with the old carts?
  • Can I still rent a yard waste/compost cart?
  • How will LRS handle bulk items?
  • Which plastics will be accepted for recycling?
To view these and other FAQ's regarding the change in haulers, please visit the Garbage and Recycling page on the village's website.

PROTECT YOUR CAR FROM CATALYTIC CONVERTER THEFT
There is a nationwide increase of catalytic converter thefts due to the valuable precious metals contained inside. The Schaumburg Police Department has responded to increased thefts in our community and reminds residents to be alert.
A catalytic converter is a device which attaches to a vehicle’s exhaust system and is designed to convert environmentally hazardous exhaust to less harmful gasses. A skilled thief can remove a catalytic converter in less than 90 seconds with a few simple tools, including an electric saw. The estimated cost to replace a catalytic converter can be in excess of $1,500.

Consider these steps to help protect your car:
  • If possible, park your vehicle in a secure garage
  • Park in well-lit areas with high visibility
  • Park near security cameras
  • Install an anti-theft device such as an alarm, steel shield, or cable locking device (available at auto repair shops and online)
  • Engrave your license plate or Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on the catalytic converter
Please report any suspicious activity by calling 911 immediately.

RESIDENTIAL ELECTRONIC PERMITTING PROCESS
The village's Community Development Department offers a friendly reminder that permits are required for work to add or alter features to your property such as fences, patios, desks, sidewalks, driveways, and sheds. For a list of work that requires a permit and what each permit will require at the time of submittal, review the Residential Permit Resource Guide.
The online residential application allows the user to conveniently submit the required project information electronically for each permit type. The applicant is also provided the ability to attach all necessary plans and documents directly to the form. If you are ready to apply, visit the Residential Village Permit Application.
The village has also designed an online express permit for the following residential projects: roofing, siding, air conditioners, furnaces, water heaters, sewer repair, plumbing, and temporary storage pods. For these permits, visit the Express Permit page.
For additional questions on residential permits, contact Permit Services at (847) 923-4420.
