City of Wheaton Historic Commission met July 16.

Here is the agenda provided by the commission:

I.Call to Order

The meeting was called to order at 7:08 pm.

Present: Nancy Flannery (Chair), Barbara Dutton (Vice Chair), Steph McGrath (Secretary), Emelie Engling (remote), Bob Purdy, Andrew Welker (remote)

Absent: Linda Moran

II. Public Comments

None.

III. Approval of Minutes

Minutes of the June 18, 2019 meeting were approved as amended on a motion by Bob, seconded by Emelie and passed unanimously.

IV. Old Business

A. Nancy reported that the Adams Memorial Library mantelpiece has been salvaged and returned to the DuPage County Historic Museum’s possession.

B. Steph reported that there are still issues with the darkness of the 1887 station real-photo postcard image of the downtown railroad depot which will be used as one of the site marker photographs. She will see if anything can be done.

C. The CA&E downtown station marker text and potential photographs were reviewed. Bob shared photographs of potential images for the downtown railroad station and polled the Commission. Photo #3 was preferred. If there is room on the plaque for a second image, photo #2 was selected.

D. Nancy informed the Commission that this year’s Bike Ride History Tour date is set for September 21st with a rain date set for September 28th. The theme will be the Underground Railroad in Wheaton. Nancy will connect with the Bicycle Advisory Commission about next year’s history ride plans.

E. A vote on the Wheaton Register of Historic Places application for 811 N. Scott was deferred to next month.

F. Nancy let the Commission know that she is still compiling files for the Wheaton Public Library. Once completed, the Commission will do publicity on this new resource in the future.

V. New Business

A. Nancy announced that Wheaton’s Media Department has taken photographs of the portraits of the City of Wheaton’s Mayors and that these scans are going to be made available through the Library website. The Historic commission also has a set of the scans, which are available for use by the public.

B. The Historic Commission’s annual report draft was distributed and reviewed. It was accepted with amendments on a motion by Barbara, seconded by Bob and passed unanimously.

C. Nancy reminded the Commission that there will be a City Council Planning Session on Monday, August 12th at 7:00 pm.

VI. Commissioner Comments

- Steph saw in Southern Living magazine that their most popular home plans for sale feature more interior walls/rooms vs open plans. She commented that it is nice to see old house style back in favor.

- Barbara received an email from Landmarks Illinois about an upcoming event.

VII. Adjournment

Barbara moved to adjourn, Steph seconded; the motion passed unanimously, and the meeting concluded at 9:08 pm.
