Lombard offers prescription medicine drop-off event

Prescriptionbottles 760x475

Lombard-area residents with leftover or expired prescription medicine can drop it off at the Lombard Police Department, 235 E. Wilson Ave., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Oct. 28, the village's website reported.

The drugs will be disposed of for free and anonymously, with no questions asked. No needles, sharp items or liquids will be accepted.

The take-back event is the 14th in seven years. Residents are advised to use the take-back event to dispose of pills instead of using the toilet or trash to get rid of them.

In April, approximately 450 tons of prescription drugs were collected nationally through 5,000 take-back events. The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) collected more than 4,050 tons of prescription drugs over the course of the first 13 take-back events.

The DEA website reported that Illinois had 153 law-enforcement agencies participating nationwide in the take-back program in April, with 146 collection sites established. Illinois collected the fourth-most pounds of unwanted pills, at 43,408.
