Rep. Peter Breen (R-Lombard) will lead the GOP on the House floor, succeeding Steven Andersson (R-Geneva), who was asked to step down after voting with Democrats to override vetoes by Gov. Bruce Rauner on state budget measures.
House Minority Leader Jim Durkin (R-Western Springs) made the announcement regarding Breen on Thursday. .
“As the General Assembly works to bring fairness and equity to our school funding formula, it will be a privilege to be our Caucus’ leading voice during this important debate,” Breen said in a press release. "It is an honor to serve in this role, and I appreciate the trust and confidence placed in me by Leader Durkin.”
Durkin said Breen's critical thinking will be beneficial in his new role as advocate for the party, according to his statement.
Breen is a constitutional attorney focusing on free-speech defense and religious liberty rights. He earned his law degree from Notre Dame. Breen previously was a trustee and acting village president of the Lombard Village Board. He joined the General Assembly in January 2015.
