St. Charles leaders trumpet seventh year of tax levy kept as is
St. Charles can once again boast that the tax levy for residents remains flat.
With City Council recently opting to keep the levy as is, the city’s taxes have now stayed at the same relative level every year since 2009.
“Responsible financial stewardship has kept the city’s operating tax levy flat since 2009,” St. Charles leaders recently told residents on the city's website. “The city’s portion of your property taxes is less than 10 percent of your entire property tax bill. On a $300,000 home, that means $928 pays for a full year of city services, including police, fire, emergency services, street maintenance and 24-hour snowplowing, planning, engineering, economic development and more.”
While the state is still operating without a budget, recent legislation allows for municipalities to begin collecting revenues from state tax funds to help offset the cost of the services for which those tax revenues are allocated. This makes it possible for cities such as St. Charles to keep local taxes at a lower rate.
