Schaumburg property owners have until Jan. 8 to appeal valuations

Schaumburg residents and other property owners have been informed that they have until Jan. 8, 2016, to submit any appeals on the assessed value of their property. If a property owner believes an assessed value is too high, he or she can appeal through the Cook County Board of Review Office.

To provide additional information and educate residents about the appeal process, Schaumburg Assessor John Lawson and Cook County Board of Review Commissioner Dan Patlak will host a seminar for residential property owners at 6:30 p.m.  on Tuesday at Schaumburg Township Hall, 1 Illinois Blvd. in Hoffman Estates. The event is free of charge, and there is no fee required to file an appeal.

The hour-long seminar will explain to taxpayers how they can file a valid tax appeal, as well as why property taxes can rise on a home, even as the home's value goes down.

Patlak will make a presentation on the appeal process. Taxpayers also will have the opportunity to speak with members of the board and staff from the Assessor’s Office and ask them specific questions. Taxpayers are asked to bring a copy of their most recent tax bill to expedite the review of any property issues.
