State Rep. Ron Sandack (R-Downers Grove) has been selected to join a bipartisan task force that will evaluate the adequacy and equity of the school funding formula.

Last year, Sandack opposed SB16, a bill that would have taken over $140 million from DuPage County schools to give the money to downstate and Chicago school districts.

This year, the bill was refiled as SB1, but Sandack says that the bill is still unfair.

“I have advocated all along that we need to do a comprehensive study into our school funding challenges, so I’m pleased to see this bipartisan task force taking shape,” Sandack said. “I certainly hope Sen. Manar will halt efforts to pass his SB1 until our panel concludes with its work and is able to bring solutions to the table.”

“No one questions the need for comprehensive school funding reform, and I look forward to working toward a bipartisan solution,” Sandack said. “Above all, the ultimate solution needs to be equitable, so that we are not just creating a new list of funding ‘winners’ and ‘losers,’ which was the case with SB16 and is the case with SB1 as it is currently written.”

The task force, which includes 10 Republicans and 13 Democrats, hopes to recommend helpful changes to the funding formula when the evaluation is complete.
