U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) recently welcomed Homira Wardak as a special guest at this year's State of the Union Address in Washington, D.C.

Duckworth said Wardak, a Harper College student studying biological sciences, is a great example of a student who values higher education.

"Homira understands firsthand the importance of a quality education," Duckworth said. "I am inspired by Homira’s strong work ethic and dedication to her academic studies."

Duckworth also highlighted the organization One Million Degrees, which has partnered with Harper College to ensure high-caliber students like Wardak excel. She also reinforced President Barack Obama's commitment that community colleges should be fully accessible to every American student.

"I applaud the president’s initiative to improve access to community colleges and create more educational opportunities for students," she said. Duckworth said she supports Obama's goal to introduce more college graduates into the workforce by 2020.

"In a time when having a college degree is becoming increasingly necessary, it is of the utmost importance to ensure that all students have access to quality higher education and are prepared to compete in the global economy," she said.
